An excerpt from "The communication man"

The cognitive mechanisms that stamp the perceptive barriers on the emitted message are identified by virtue of the current theories of the persuasive communication and the capture of decisions of the consumer. According to those, they control phenomena like:

Selective presentation.
It is responsible for the distortion between the message the issuer sends and what reaches the recipient. The recipient does not hear everything the issuer emits, not only because of a mere limited capacity of perception, but because we, human beings, tend to avoid to expose ourselves to messages which do not turn out to be instantly satisfactory.
Those discarded aspects depend on certain factors of the personality, need, aptitude, attitude, values and culture of the recipient. The impact in the partial loss of the message can be significant.

Selective distortion.
It corresponds to the loss of information between what the recipient hears and what he understands. By virtue of it, the recipient will struggle for fitting the stimulus into his preexisting models of thinking. Here it is where enters the game the memory, the lived experiences and the prejudices of the recipient.

Selective retention.
The loss of information between what the recipient understands and what he retains. The recipient tends to retain better those messages with which he personally attunes. Depending on the degree of tuning between the message and the recipient, the latter will value unconsciously the importance of the information and will store it consistently in his memory and thus will begin to include it as a part of his cognitive mechanisms.
